Surviving the Easter Chocolate Fest

“All I really need is love, but a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt!” Lucy Van Pelt, “Peanuts”

There are 2 times in the year when I think chocolate is king…Easter and Xmas.  Seeing as the latter is 260 days away.  Don’t hate me for sharing that news, you know as soon as Easter is over the shops will start making room for the decorations so I am really just helping you prepare :)

So it’s a given that sugar is bad for your teeth, BUT chocolate which I love is an exception?  Absolutely not (although it should be) however here are my top tips for protecting those teeth from what they are going to be bombarded on Easter Sunday…especially your Kids

Jessica, please brush your teeth!

CELEBRITY A–Lister, Jessica Simpson, recently made a shocking dental confession on live TV. The Hollywood star announced on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that she only brushes her teeth a few times each week.

The 29 year old actress and singer, who is known for her glamorous image  is one famous name the public look to for beauty and health tips. But this is one habit the public really shouldn’t follow.

Jessica admitted “I only brush my teeth maybe three times a week – I don’t brush every day.”

The star continued: “It’s because my teeth are so white and I don’t like them to feel too slippery, but I do use Listerine mouthwash and I do floss every day. My lips just slide all over the place… I can’t catch up with my mouth. So I need a little coating. I know it’s gross, but I always have fresh breath.”

Straight Teeth In 6 Weeks!

As we get older, our teeth become more crowded..it’s a fact, part of the aging process, I call it the dental equivalent of everything going south…ladies, you know exactly what I mean!

Adult braces is one of the treaments that is growing fastest in my practice.  You are not too old to have it, the oldest patient I have done it for so far is 72 and looks totally fabulous. With the new dental innovations, ‘invisible’ braces are no longer a thing of science fiction

This lady came to me wanting Veneers 2 months before her wedding to straighten her front teeth.  Now I am the queen of veneers as I do so many and I love creating new smiles with them.  However where I can, I try to be as conservative as possible and being a dental phobic, I always say the less dentistry the better :)

In this case I used the the Inman Aligner which is a relatively new and reasonably quick way of straightening teeth for adults. Teeth can be straightened in as little as 6 weeks (16 weeks for complex cases) with no drilling and usually less of an investment than porcelain veneers or orthodontic treatment. It is not suitable for all situations and more complex orthodontic work or porcelain veneers may be the better option

For Karen, we achieved a beautiful in time for her wedding and topped it off with teeth whitening to give her a gleaming white smile

Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff!

Ok today I was having one of those…”why did I get out of bed this morning, the world hates me and I hate everyone”… kind of days.  Anyone else get them too?

Then came across this image, burst out laughing and my world was back in balance…puts it all into perspective don’t you think?

So I loose a tooth…what's the Big Deal?

What’s so bad about losing a tooth?

Teeth can be lost due to an accident or other trauma but the most common reason people lose a tooth is because of gum disease and/or decay.

So, is it a big deal to lose a tooth? I mean you can’t die from it, right?

No, you can’t, but losing even a single tooth can cause the other teeth to shift and move around – not good. This can affect chewing and your ability to absorb nutrients from your food.

Another key change is the face  changing shape, often looking “sunken.” This can be incredibly ageing.  Look at what happens when people take their dentures out, their faces literally collapse

Every single tooth is worth fighting for and does have an impact not just on how your mouth functions but also your overall face shape.

I met someone recently who was complaining about the fact he had treatment to a tooth (root canal) and 2 years on it failed and needed to be redone.  He felt it was easier to pull the tooth out.  I asked him if he had broken a leg, had it set in plaster and two years later it broke at the same spot, would he ask to have it amputated?  Point made, he is having treatment

If you do loose a teeth there are so many things we can do now to fill the gap…but nothing is ever as good as what your creator gave you…so fight to keep those teeth!
