A new study has shown that men have more than DOUBLE the risk of head and neck cancers compared to women. This is because of HPV (Human Papillomavirus)

HPV is a very common virus that lives on our skin or in skin like areas eg the mouth, genital areas and anus. Usually there are no issues, our bodies protect us from the virus but in some people their immune systems can’t fight the virus and cancer can result

Around 10% of men had oral HPV compared to 3.6% of women which is the reason for their increased risk

Smoking and drinking are obvious risk factors for oral cancers but having oral HPV infection increases the risk by a whopping 50%

Now I don’t want to spoil anyone’s fun but the more partners you have, the more risk, that makes sense …BUT did you know ANY type of sex is can spread the infection?

The ‘good’ news is that Oral Cancer is one of the most successful to treat if spotted early.

If you have any ulcer or sore in your mouth that does not heal within 2-3 weeks see your dentist. Every 6 months, see your dentist. All your friends today, when you see them don’t just say “hi how are you?” Say instead “hi how are you, when did you see the dentist last” You could be the one that saves their life

There are areas of your mouth only your dentist can see. As part of your regular checkup your dentist should do a full oral cancer screen…every time. They will check not just your teeth but also the deep recesses of your mouth, tongue, palate, muscles and glands

So ladies, please spread the word as if the men in your life are anything like mine, they usually need major nudging to get them to see any medical people

Happy New Year!!! 2011 was really tough for everyone and I am seriously glad it is 2012!

Out with the old,In with the New!

I love the new year, it is filled with so much hope and expectation. All the possibilities just waiting to be taken.

One of my favourite things is opening up a new journal or diary. There is something really exciting about a blank sheet of paper. I am totally into technology but you just do not get the same buzz with a blinking cursor

Lot’s in store for Londonsmiling this year, and I cannot wait to share it with you all

Party Proof Your Teeth

Don’t know about you but the knowledge xmas is basically next week fills me with more dread than joy. One half is excited, get to see the family stuff my face and watch rubbish tv, that is the joy of the season :)

The other half knows next week is going to be a manic rush of getting things done, seeing people, running out of time…….

The one thing you don’t want to be stressing about is your teeth

What to avoid!

Here are some top tips to ‘party proof’ your teeth from the things that might harm them during the festive food fest

1. Brush your teeth BEFORE the party. Apart from the obvious…fresher breath, if you get rid of all the plaque before, teeth are protected from the bugs that cause damage. Also very important if you are a red wine drinker, your teeth don’t stain as much

2 Pop some sugar free gum in your pocket. Might be considered antisocial but in this case it is medicinal. At intervals during the night if you drinking anything fizzy or sweet…duh!! then chew just until the flavour disappears (usually about 10mins) The saliva produced helps protect the teeth

3. So you got home it is mega late and you know you should brush your teeth, but you also know you are not going too? At leash swish out with a fluoride mouthwash. It is not as good as brushing but better than doing nothing and only takes 10secs. I call it my 3 S’s….Swish, spit and Snore

Above all SMILE no matter what’s going on you will look better, feel better and someone is bound to smile back…if not, find a mirror and smile at your self, I do it all the time!

Mouth Cancer Month

November is Mouth Cancer Action Month…bet you didn’t know that! It is not a sexy topic but it is really serious news.

It is estimated that more than 6000 people will be diagnosed with mouth cancer this year, but early detection could save over 90% of their lives…so you can’t afford not to know about it!

In my youth (yes I know I keep talking about getting old, my insecurity, showing that I want people to reassure me…) it used to be rare, seen mainly in patients over 40 years old….OMG that is me!!

However we see it now in much younger people. It kills more people than cervical and testicular cancer combined and used to be 5x more common in men than women, but not anymore with our lifestyle changes

Risk Factors?

Oral Sex! Got your attention didn’t it? HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) has been linked to this disease and it is transmitted via oral sex. Stay safe

Alcohol and smoking. Tobacco has over 60 cancer causing chemicals. Alcohol makes the body absorb more tobacco, which is a bummer as the majority of people tend to do the two together. If you smoke and drink in in excess you are up to 30x more likely to develop the disease

Even when you quit smoking the possibility of getting mouth cancer remains high, for ex-smokers, up to 20 years after quitting

So enough of the doom and gloom. I’m not hear to preach at you all. You KNOW smoking and drinking is bad for you right? My job is to give you the tools to help win the battle..until you quit

So here are my top rules to help beat this disease

1. Quit smoking, don’t drink …ok that’s done

2.Improve your diet. All those anti-oxidant foods work eg broccoli, berries eg blueberries, infact any fruit/veg with colour!

3. Visit your dentist regularly. As part of your routine checkup they should check your soft tissues, muscles and glands

3.Self Examination- look out for the following….

Ulcers which do not heal within three weeks
Red and white patches in the mouth
Unusual lumps or swellings in the mouth

4. If in doubt, GET CHECKED OUT!
